African-American Teen Earns 6.9 GPA, Named Best Graduating Student Upon High School Graduation in the US

Tobechukwu Tobi Phillips, an exceptional African-American girl originally from Nigeria, has made history by becoming Alvin High School’s first black valedictorian in its 125-year existence, located in Texas, United States.

Tobechukwu achieved a remarkable 6.9 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale, making her the top-ranked student in her class. She is among only 86 black students in the school’s total enrollment of 2,800 students. Tobechukwu maintained straight A’s in all her courses throughout her four years of high school, an accomplishment that was no easy feat.

In addition to her outstanding academic performance, Tobechukwu is also involved in extracurricular activities. She is a volleyball player, a track athlete, a Sunday School teacher at her church, a member of the Rho Kappa Honor Society, the president of the National Honor Society, and an AP ambassador.

Tobechukwu was selected as one of the 16 recipients from a pool of 4,000 applicants to receive the Full-Ride Forty Acre Scholarship to the University of Texas at Austin, where she will be attending the Nursing School. She plans to become a pediatric nurse practitioner and eventually open her own clinic.

In her advice to other scholars of color, Tobechukwu urged them to adopt the mindset of Rosa Parks and not conform to the stereotypes that have hindered their progress for so long. She emphasized standing up for what you believe in and being the change you wish to see in the world.
